Nelly Onate
U.S. Navy

Nelly completed two years of Air Force JROTC while in high school. She went on to join the U.S. Navy in 1998, starting out as an E-2 Seaman Apprentice. Nelly relays that her purpose for joining the Navy was the benefits of the Montgomery GI Bill. Initially she thought she would only serve for four years then go on to college.

Nelly continued active duty service in the Navy for 7 years and then transitioned into the Naval Reserves. While on active duty she served at Naval Air Station Mayport, Fl., Naval Support Activity La Maddalena, Italy, Naval Medical Center San Diego,CA, and the US Naval Ship Mercy. Her reserve assignments were at NOSC San Diego, NOSC Pensacola, FL, NOSC Nashville, TN, and NRC Greensboro, NC. 

Senior Chief Master at Arms Nelly Onate is currently active in the Naval Reserves. She holds the position of OIC of the NSF unit out of Greensboro, NC.  Nelly will retire with over 25 years of service this August of 2024. 

Nelly's civilian job is currently that of HR office support at her local school district. She states, "I love my job and I am blessed."  

Nelly is currently the Vice President of Triangle Women Veterans Unit 144

Fourth Saturday of March, June, September,

and first Saturday of December.

Meetings are in person or Zoom and often include lunches, speakers or special programs. Open to all women veterans, family members, and those supporting women veterans.
